Lightning strikes costing insurance millions

Posted:

Springfield – An underrated danger and the second leading cause of storm related deaths in the U.S., Illinois is ranked seventh for insurance claims caused by lightning.

Damage from lightning strikes in 2012 cost State Farm more than 200-million dollars in insurance claims. Just in Illinois, over 10-million dollars was paid out, for more than 1-thousand claims. As the number of electronics in homes and businesses rises, so does the risk of damage.

Plasma and high definition television sets, home entertainment centers, multiple computers, smart phones, gaming systems and other expensive devices continue to have a significant impact on the number of claims.

Some tips to keep in mind to reduce your chances of damage from a power surge are making sure your equipment is correctly installed, setting up additional protection for important electronic equipment, and operating electronics at appropriate times.
