Lightning strikes cost Illinois homeowners $1 billion


WAPELLA -- Illinois ranks in the top ten for insurance claims resulting from lightning.

According to State Farm, lightning strikes cost homeowners nearly $1 billion last year.

A mobile home in Wapella was struck by lightning Tuesday afternoon, Causing some major damage inside the home.

Wapella Fire Chief Nelson Thorp said luckily, no one was hurt.

"All the wiring in the ceiling was just fried, and we know the pop they heard was their TV getting hit," Thorp said.
