Deadline for April flood relief extended

Posted:

Springfield- Illinois residents affected by April flooding who want to apply for federal relief now have until July 24 to do so.

Illinois Emergency Management Agency officials said Tuesday the U.S. government granted the state's request for an extension from July 9.

People in federally designated counties may seek grants and loans to help with recovery from the flood.

Gov. Pat Quinn said the federal government also approved adding Putnam and Warren counties to the list, bringing the total to 35.

Historic flooding that affected nearly half the state led Quinn to request assistance.

More than 49,000 applications have been approved with $122 million in grants awarded to help people with flood-related expenses. The U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $25 million in disaster-assistance loans.
