Scovill Zoo penguin exhibit nears completion

DECATUR -- It won't be long until penguins find a new home in Central Illinois.

The much-anticipated penguin exhibit at Decatur's Scovill Zoo is nearly complete.

The $1.4 million exhibit has been under construction since December.

It's the soon-to-be home of the endangered species Humboldt penguins.

There will be a pool, viewing deck and a pop-up dome to give visitors an up-close look.

Assistant Zoo Director, Ken Frye, said the exhibit should be complete later this summer.

"They're still shooting for it all to be wrapped up come end of August," said Frye.

Once the finishing touches are complete, Frye said the birds should be in town in October.
