DECATUR -- Some local seniors were getting relief from the heat Thursday afternoon.
With rising costs of keeping your home cool, some lower-income households have been forced to keep the air conditioning turned off. That's why LIHEAP was at the Macon County Senior Center signing up people for energy bill assistance Thursday.
The Senior Center's Judy Peifer said the extreme heat is especially dangerous for the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat illnesses.
"You can't sit in a hot apartment or hot mobile home and not have any ill effects on your health," said Peifer.
For those needing help fighting the heat, the Senior Center has opened its doors as a public cooling center.
