Springfield -- A state trooper who was killed last year is among those being honored by the Illinois State Police for their service to the agency.
In a news release, the agency says Kyle Deatherage was recognized Wednesday for exemplary service and awarded The Purple Heart Medal during the 26th Annual Awards Ceremony. The event was attended by members of his family.
The trooper was killed last November when a tractor-trailer struck him on Interstate 55 in central Illinois while he was making a traffic stop.
Others honored include State Police Special Agent Brion Hanley who was named Officer of the Year. The news release noted Hanley's work in the investigation of a 1957 slaying of a 7-year-old girl that led to the arrest and conviction last year of a 72-year-old man.
