Pension panel making progress, but no deal yet

Springfield -- Illinois lawmakers on a committee tasked with finding a solution to the state's pension problem say they're making progress. But they won't say when they expect to finish their work.

The 10-member panel was working Wednesday.

Rep. Elaine Nekritz is a Democrat from Northbrook. She says the conference committee is "quite close" to a deal, but members are still hashing out details.

Bloomington Republican Sen. Bill Brady says the panel is haggling over the final amount of savings that's needed.

The committee was formed this summer during a special session over the state's nearly $100 billion pension backlog. And the governor is withholding lawmakers' pay until they can hash out a deal.

Any agreement still needs to be approved by the Legislature.
