Firefighters honor one of their own

Decatur- Firefighters honored one of their own on Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, a Normal firefighter died while chopping wood off-duty.

Jeffrey Hilton's memorial service was Tuesday morning in Bloomington. Family, friends and fellow firefighters stopped in Decatur to move the casket from the hearse to the engine.

"It's steeped in tradition and that's why we do everything as a group. That's why we stand at attention. That's why we render a salute because we're giving honor to a comrade whose fallen," said Capt. Tom Howard of the Decatur Fire Department.

Hilton was buried at Point Pleasant Cemetery in Long Creek.

If you would like to help his family, a fund is set up under Jeff Hilton Familty Memorial at Prairie State Bank in Mt. Zion. You can also contribute online at
