Kraft Foods is asking the city of Champaign for a three point six million dollar subsidy to build a thirty-eight million dollar warehouse. The warehouse would be seven-hundred-sixty-thousand square feet, and the construction would take place on the former site of the AC Humko Plant on Mattis Avenue. City officials say the project would pay for itself after ten years, and it would also secure the future of one of the area's biggest employers and possibly create more jobs. Officials are proposing the creation of a new tax increment financing district to pay the subsidy. The city council will need to sign off on it and will discuss the plan Tuesday night at the Champaign City Building.
