Law enforcement agencies work to take illegal guns off the street
Decatur - Crime Stoppers, Decatur Police and Macon County Sheriff, Tom Schneider are teaming up to take illegal guns off the streets.
Decatur Police proposed the idea to give citizens an incentive to report suspects that carry guns illegally. Now, Sheriff Schneider will dedicate $5,000 towards rewards, for people that report suspects carrying firearms illegally.
If a suspect is arrested from a good tip, the caller will receive $500. Schneider said the concern from the public helped in making the decision to further the program "The one message I have for our community is that we listened to your concerns and we will continue to respond in the future regarding what we learned from the town hall meeting."
The program will be assessed after the first year, or when the $5,000 is distributed. Cash rewards will only go to Crime Stoppers tips. Tips called into police will not result in a reward.
