New furry officer joins the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office
Springfield - The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office received a furry new addition on Wednesday.
A donation from the Landmark Automotive Group, helped deputies to add a new member to their K-9 unit. The newest deputy, a 15 month old Belgian Malinios named Rajah, will become an important part of the sheriff's office.
K-9 Coordinator, Brian Stapleton said it is important to have a K-9 unit to help with break-ins "When we go into a building, or when we go into a home that's been broken into, where there's forced entry, we know that someone's gone in there that isn't supposed to be in there. We are able to take these animals and to deploy and we can send them in alone. The handler walks up and uses cover, but what they do is they stand at the door and let the dog work away from them and these dogs are trained to alert to the handler that there is someone inside."
Rajah will be the third dog serving with the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office.
Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed on a sidewalk outside the Pentagon Thursday after his invitation to a prayer service inside was withdrawn because of comments that insulted people of other religions. More>>
