Boil order due to water main break

Decatur - The city of Decatur has implemented a boil order for areas of southern Decatur and Mt. Zion until further notice.

The area impacted by the boil order is bound by the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur to the north, County Highway 7 ( Baltimore Road) to the east, County Highway 30 (Elwin Road) including the Shepherds Hill subdivision south of County Highway 30 to the south and Wesley Road to the west. All Village of Mt. Zion water customers, no matter where they are located, are also under the boil order.

Customers in the boil order area should not drink water from the tap without boiling it for three to five minutes first and letting it cool before consuming. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.

The boil order is being issued as a precaution due to a 16" water main break located in the Sangamon River bed downstream of the Lake Decatur dam that caused water pressure to fall below required minimum levels for a short period of time.

Customers impacted by the break are also supplied by other water mains but their water pressure will remain below normal until the broken water main is repaired. They are also urged to conserve water use to a minimum until normal water pressure is restored.
