Decatur Public Library cutbacks

DECATUR - You can expect earlier closing times at the Decatur Public Library.

Due to budgetary issues, library officials say the library will be closed Sundays beginning October 13. Effective the 14th, reduced hours will go into effect. The library will be open from 9:00 AM-7:00 PM instead of its normal 9:00 PM closing time.

The need for budget cuts at the Decatur Public Library will soon result in earlier closing times on weekdays and the loss of Sunday hours.

The library will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Fridays and Saturdays.

Six union employees were laid off Tuesday and Wednesday.

Three professional librarians were also laid off in August.

Despite the cuts, officials believe library users will find their services - for the most part - uninterrupted.

Library officials say the reduced hours and recent layoffs would be the end of cuts for now.

But more adjustments could be made as the 2014 budget is crafted.
