Slow moving vehicle warning

SPRINGFIELD - The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office and the Sangamon County Farm Bureau are asking for motorists to be aware of slow moving vehicles during this harvest season.

"During the harvest, traveling on county roads includes frequent encounters with tractors, heavy trucks and combines", said Sangamon County Undersheriff Jack Campbell.  "In addition, many rural roads have hills and curves that impair vision for safe passing."  To avoid any tragedies this harvest, the Sheriff's Office recommends the following safe driving tips:

  1. When you see a farm vehicle or grain truck, SLOW DOWN. You will close the distance faster than you think.
  2. Allow plenty of side spacing and for oncoming vehicles before passing.
  3. Do not attempt to pass on near a hill or curve.
  4. Above all BE PATIENT, a couple extra minutes is worth a life.

Jim Birge, Manager of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau adds, "We have over half million acres of farm ground in Sangamon County, but we also have many urban areas.  The problem comes when drivers aren't patient or when city drivers encounter farming vehicles.  If we think about these situations ahead of time, we should be able to avoid an accident."
