New gun laws could cause more overcrowding in prisons

Tougher gun laws could mean continued prison overcrowding, not to mention hundreds of millions of dollars in state bills.

A proposal backed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel could add nearly 3,900 inmates to the prison system. The new laws would increase minimum sentences.

Department of Corrections spokesman Tom Shaer, says the state would need at least one new prison. The prison would add $7,000,000 in operation costs.
