Macon County ranks high in domestic abuse cases

DECATUR -- Domestic violence is a growing problem in Illinois, with 80 deaths reported this year.

The numbers are especially high in areas of Central Illinois. According to Dove, Inc., Macon County is second to Cook County in domestic abuse cases per capita.

That's why Dove is shedding light on the issue. The organization offers several programs, including counseling and a shelter for women and children who are victims of abuse.

"It's not just those cuts and bruises, because they eventually go away," said program director, Teri Ducy. "It's the emotional abuse as well that can be just as damaging."

Illinois' Domestic Abuse Hotline is available 24-hours at 1-877-TO-END-DV.
