Steps to restore Shelbyville's Chautauqua are underway

Shelbyville - The first step to restore Shelbyville's 110-year-old Chautauqua building is underway.

The Shelbyville City Council agreed to hire a Decatur engineering firm to assess the project. The group will inspect the building and make recommendations to restore and repair it.

The building was set to be demolished, but community support raised thousands of dollars to save the historic theater.

They estimate structural repairs will cost at least one hundred fifty thousand most of which they've raised now. A full restoration will cost one point seven million.
