URBANA -- The University of Illinois says it will review every academic department on its Urbana-Champaign campus on a regular basis.
The school says it will examine all 80 departments on an eight-year cycle. Associate Provost Barbara Wilson says ten departments will be reviewed every year. The effort will start this year with a pilot project of three reviews, including sociology, mechanical engineering and agricultural and consumer economics.
The campus once did reviews but stopped in recent years. Wilson says the new effort isn't meant to be punitive. Campus officials say the goal is to strengthen academics and help departments focus on goals.
