Farm owners warned not to fall for high rent offers

Posted:

Decatur -- Farm owners are being warned not to fall for high-priced rent offers from far away.

Thursday marks the last day land owners can tell their farming tenants that their lease will not be renewed for the 2014 season. With that deadline approaching, some landholders are receiving rent requests from distant farmers offer much more than the going rate.

Agricultural specialists say falling for the allure of more money could be a mistake. Low profit margin prices make it unlikely owners will ever see that money.

"They really need to think is that person going to be able to farm profitably with that high cash rent. We've got very low commodity prices and high input costs, when you put those together, you can't afford to pay a cash rent that will be more than $200, $300 dollars in 2014," said Stu Ellis, an agricultural expert.
