Ebert Foundation will match donations for memorial sculpture

Champaign -- The Ebert Foundation will match up to $25,000 in donations for a memorial sculpture of the late film critic in Champaign.

The life-size statue is expected to cost $122,500 to construct. It will reside outside the Virginia Theatre, which hosts the annual Roger Ebert's Film Festival, better known as Ebertfest.

"I can visualize it all the time," said Donna Anderson, who developed the concept of having a sculpture. "I think about what it will look like in front of the theater, I think it's very exciting. I think people are going to come to see it and I think it beautifies our community."

Anderson says donations to date will cover about a fifth of the total costs. Gifts can be mailed to the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois at 307 W. University Ave. Champaign, IL 61820. Donors should label their gifts for the "Ebert Sculpture." Donations are also accepted online at http://www.ebertsculpture.org/.
