Sheriff's Office Investigating Metal Theft at Formosa Plant
Illiopolis - As crews continue to demolish the former Formosa Plant, thieves are targeting the plant as well, stealing scrap metal, particularly copper.
It's become such a problem that Formosa has rehired a security team to make sure that nothing else is stolen, and that nobody gets hurt.
Crews continue to clean up what is left of the plastics plant in Illiopolis, and recently, they made a shocking discovery.
"The employees out there discovered that somebody had broken into the production facility and had stolen some copper," said Sangamon County under sheriff Jack Campbell.
After one week of investigating, Campbell told WAND News "They did it again, and at that point Formosa made the decision to rehire the security firm to protect themselves incase somebody got hurt."
Campbell added it appears the thieves had a working knowledge of the plant.
"They had to break in, and the method of which they broke in, which I do know about, tells me that the person had to be familiar with it. So probably it was a former employee or contractor and knew how to get into the plant," said Campbell.
There are currently no suspects, and the investigation continues.
