BROOKLYN, N.Y., Jan. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At a White House higher education summit today hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Kingsborough Community College President Stuart Suss made three major commitments to action on college opportunity. The summit is dedicated to launching a plan of action for increasing college opportunity for low-income and disadvantaged students.  The day-long event includes remarks from President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

"It is indeed an honor to represent one of the leading community colleges in the country at this distinguished higher education event hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.  I am confident that the commitments I am making on behalf of Kingsborough Community College to the plan of action will expand college opportunity for low-income and disadvantaged students,"  said President Suss.

Kingsborough's commitments to the plan of action include the following:

  • To increase the number of students who complete a college-level math course by the time they achieve 30 credits.
  • To build on Kingsborough's nationally recognized Learning Community Program by designing a new Learning Community focusing on quantitative reasoning.
  • To raise the pass rates of students in the developmental math course sequence.
