Woodworker Carves Smiles Into the Community

A Decatur man is trying to carve a smile into the community. His method?.. Woodwork. His inspiration?.. Faith. Sam Decesaro picked up the unconventional hobby about 13 years ago. Now retired.. he spends his days creating spiritual sculptures out of wood. His subjects include biblical characters and scriptures. Of the 60 pieces he's completed..he hasn't sold a single one for a profit. Instead.. he gives them as gifts.

"The fulfillment is to see the smile on their face when I give it to them," said Decesaro.

According to his wife, Becky, "He's just committed to using his hobby to make other people happy as well as himself."

Some of his work is publicly displayed at Mound ford Free Methodist Church in Decatur and at a Christian Camp in Cowden.
