Riverton - The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office Drug Interdiction and Response Team (DIRT) located a package of cannabis, set to be delivered.
Police say, the package was heading to Shawn Hamilton, 39, home in the 400 block of East Washington Street, in Riverton. The package was damaged during shipping, and allegedly smelled of cannabis.
The U.S. Post Office contacted the DIRT team, the package was repaired and sent out for delivery. Hamilton was not at home when the package was delivered, UPS left a note on his door to pick up the package at the post office.
Hamilton picked up the package the next day, he was approached by officers on his way out of the building.
Hamilton told the DIRT team he did not know where the package came from or what was in the box. He was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis over 500 grams.
The package contained three plastic jugs containing 997 grams of cannabis.
