Police and suspect struggle over gun, both taken to the hospital
Springfield Police are on scene in the 1800 bock of Gregory Court.
Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday police responded to a 911 hang up call, when police arrived a male subject was armed.
Police and suspect struggled over the gun, both subjects ended up on the ground. During the altercation the officer suffered severe head and facial injuries resulting in the officer shooting the subject in the leg.
Both the suspect and officer were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The Illinois State Police is investigating the incident.
"It appears our officer followed protocol," Chief Winslow said.
