Restoration work underway at Lincoln Tomb

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A $700,000 restoration project at the temporarily closed Abraham Lincoln tomb in Springfield is expected to finish in April.

The State Journal-Register reports the interior of the tomb in the Oak Ridge Cemetery was wrapped in plastic this week. The tomb has been closed since December.

Crews are working to fix plaster molding and repair cracks in the tomb's marble walls. They're also repairing the ceiling in the rotunda and the tomb's burial chamber, adding LED lighting and adding fresh paint.

The tomb was built in 1869. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. About 350,000 people visit each year.

Authorities are restoring the tomb ahead of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's death in April 2015.
