Decatur -  A former Macon County Health Department employee has been taken into custody, after department checks and cash went missing.

Macon County Deputies arrested 43-year-old Aniko Smith, after over $3,000 went missing. An investigation revealed that on December 6th, 2013 Smith was assigned a deposit from the health department in the amount of $3,067.10. The Macon County Treasures Office showed that no deposit had been made to any health department revenue accounts.

The total amount consisted of $745 in cash and $2.322.10 in personal check deposits.

According to a press release it was also determined by health department administration that cash from a health department deposit from January 28th, 2014 was also not accounted for. This deposit had also been given to Smith for deposit. Health department administrators then terminated Smith's employment.

Police say, that 14 checks were still unaccounted for.

Lt. Jonathan Butts stated, "On February 26th, 2014 an arrest warrant was obtained for Smith's arrest by investigating detectives, for the offenses of theft over/500 and official misconduct, with bond being set in the amount of $5,000.00 both felony complaints."   Part of Smith's duties at the health department were to make health department deposits to the county treasures office.

Smith has since been released after posting a cash bond of $500.00 and is due back in court on  March 28th, 2014. Butts stated, "The investigation is continuing to determine that all deposits are accounted for that Smith was responsible for."
