"Protect the Melon" campaign to teach students about helmet safety


Jacksonville - Students in will get a lesson geared toured helmet safety while riding a bike, roller skates, scooters, and skateboards.


The Jacksonville Park Foundation and Passavant Area Hospital have partnered with Illinois Collage Professor Dr. Jeremy Turner to give away helmets to every fourth grade student in Jacksonville.


"Protect the Melon" aims to show students the importance of wearing helmets to protect against brain injuries. Dr. Turner says, "the value of wearing a helmet has been shown to save lives and protect against brain injuries."


On Thursday, April 17, Illinois College students will travel to District 117 schools to teach students how the brain works, and how wearing a helmet can save them from injuries when hitting the pavement. Students will also receive a free helmet.


Here is a list of schools Illinois College students will visit:


Murrayville:     7:50 - 8:35 a.m.


South:              9:00 - 9:45 a.m.


Eisenhower:    10:00 - 10:45 a.m.


Lincoln:           11:00 - 11:45 a.m.


Washington:    12:30 - 1:15 p.m.


North:              1:30 - 2:15 p.m.
