Danville considers letting people raise chickens

DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- The eastern Illinois city of Danville is considering letting its residents raise chickens after a local woman asked that they do so.

The City Council on Tuesday night will discuss the idea.

Joyce Schmitt has been asking the city for two years to consider making it legal to raise chickens in town. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer said a few other residents have asked, too.

Schmitt says she has already raised chickens in her yard despite city ordinances that make it illegal. City inspectors have shut down her operation a couple of times.

Eisenhauer said he wants to study how Champaign and other towns that have made it legal to raise chickens in recent years have done it.

Danville is a city of about 33,000 on the Indiana state line.
