Rantoul Man To Be Tried For Murder

URBANA A Rantoul foster father will be tried on charges he murdered his foster son last month.

According to our partners at the Champaign News-Gazette, Rantoul police investigator Tim Rivest testified in court Tuesday that on April 17, Patrick Kennedy called paramedics to report his seven week old son choking on his formula.

But after he was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, doctors determined the infant had suffered broken ribs and traumatic brain injuries.  On April 23, the seven week old was declared brain dead.

Rivest said  in court today that Kennedy initially offered no explanation for the infant's injuries, although he later described the baby as "fussy". Carle doctors told Rivest that the injuries occurred no later than two hours before arriving in the hospital, and required an "adult amount of force."

Kennedy was arrested on April 24, but was released from county jail on Saturday after his wife posted bond.

Kennedy is due back in court June 17.
