URBANA - A man has been formally charged Thursday with robbing one Champaign bank Wednesday and attempting to rob a second. Maurion Atkins faces aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated robbery charges.
According to our partners at the Champaign News-Gazette, Champaign police say on Wednesday afternoon a man, later identified by employees as Atkins, entered Prospect Bank, approached a teller with a hand in his pocket, and demanded cash. When the teller told him to wait and walked away from him, he left the bank.
According to police, later that afternoon a man entered Central Illinois Bank and approached a teller, demanding that she put money on the counter. After getting the cash, he left the bank.
Champaign police later stopped a silver sport utility vehicle that Atkins was in. Inside the vehicle, police say they found a plastic handgun in a jacket, cash, and clothing similar to what bank employees said the robber was wearing and what was seen on video from the banks.
Atkins' bond is set at $500,000. He is due back in court June 14, 2014
