Environmental Protection Agency Seeks Comments On Proposed Aquifer Designation
CHAMPAIGN - After announcing a proposed decision to approve a petition concerning the Mahomet Aquifer System, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on the matter. The U.S. EPA will hold an informational meeting and formal public hearing in Champaign on Tuesday, May 13th.
The petition asks that the aquifer be designated as a sole source aquifer, and under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA does have the authority to designate an aquifer as a sole source of drinking water for a specified area.. That designation would allow the EPA to review all federally funded projects in the area to ensure they will not contaminate the aquifer.
The informational meeting and public hearing will be held in the Hilton Garden Inn, located at 1501 S. Neil St. in Champaign. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 7:15 p.m. The hearing is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. A second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at the Freedom Hall in Morton at 7:30 p.m.
