Eastern Illinois man pleads guilty to attempted murder
URBANA - A Fithian man pleaded guilty to the attempted first-degree murder of a University of Illinois law professor on Monday. Joshua Scaggs, 26, admitted to slashing the throat of professor Dhammika Dharmapala at a Champaign train station in 2011.
Dharmapala says he has had three major surgeries and several other medical procedures performed since the attack. He also says the attack was a "significant blow" to both his and his wife's careers.
Scaggs has been in custody since his arrest on December 7, 2011. Sentencing is scheduled for June 16. Scaggs could face up to 20 years in prison
