Toxic waste disposal above aquifer opposed by Governor Quinn
SPRINGFIELD - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is being urged by Governor Pat Quinn to block a proposal to dispose of toxic waste at a landfill located above an aquifer.
On Wednesday, Quinn wrote to the EPA, contending the proposal to dispose PCBs at the Clinton Landfill would pose a "significant risk" of contaminating the aquifer, and asking the project to be scrapped.
The Mahomet Aquifer provides drinking water for hundreds of thousands of central Illinois residents. The company that owns the landfill has said it would install a liner to protect the aquifer. Central Illinois mayors appealed to Quinn last week for his opinion on the issue.
