University of Illinois faculty files petition to form a union
URBANA - University of Illinois faculty members have filed a petition with the state saying they want to unionize.
Union supporters say they filed notice Wednesday with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. The board oversees collective bargaining involving universities and other schools. Union organizers also say signatures have been collected from a majority of the more than 400 instructors on the Urbana-Champaign campus who lack the job security and tenure of professors.
A hearing to discuss the petition is expected to be held in several weeks.
