Property tax refund bill introduced to General Assembly

SPRINGFIELD -A proposal filed by House Speaker Michael Madigan Monday that would give Illinois homeowners a $500 property tax refund has been introduced in the General Assembly.  The measure was a key part of Governor Pat Quinn's budget address earlier this year.

Quinn says the $500 refunds would help ease the burden of an unfair property tax system, but they could also help Quinn and other Democrats politically.  The proposal could issue refunds for 2013 property taxes as soon as September, mere weeks before the November election, when many lawmakers, including Quinn, face re-election.

Republicans oppose the refunds, saying they would cost the state more than the current 5 percent property tax credit.
