Memorial Day weekend ice cream social and tree tour at Oak Ridge Cemetery
SPRINGFIELD - The Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site will observe Memorial Day weekend with a brand-new presentation on historic trees and an old-fashioned ice cream social on Saturday, May 24.
In an event reminiscent of times when families would gather for Sunday picnics at Oak Ridge Cemetery, visitors can enjoy cake and ice cream for a nominal fee between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Representatives who will describe the restoration of the First Street entrance to the cemetery will be on hand, as will the Springfield Municipal Band.
A new tree tour that presents the history of the cemetery using modern technology will be introduced by the Lincoln Monument Association. Twelve historic trees have been given markers that provide GPS coordinates, information about the tree, and offer a QR code that provides pictures and additional information. Each tree will also have an interpreter to relate horticultural and historic facts.
