Senate Republicans introduce rival school funding bill

SPRINGFIELD - An alternative education funding reform plan has been proposed by Illinois Senate Republicans.  They say it is a more practical effort than a rival bill being pushed by Democrats.  State Senator Dale Righter sponsored the legislation, which would require promised general state aid funds to be sent to schools before grants for specialized grants could be given to districts.

General state aid funds are usually prorated so state aid money can be spread around for specialized programs, and Republicans say the practice puts poorer schools that are more dependent on general state aid at a disadvantage.  The Democrats' school funding legislation would change the entire funding formula to factor in poverty levels.

The Republican bill remains in committee.
