Forsyth 8th grader advanced 6 rounds in Nat'l Spelling Bee
FORSYTH -- A local 8th grader made it to the 6th round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This was Yasir Hasnain's fourth consecutive trip to the National Bee.
The 13-year-old from Maroa-Forsyth Middle School was one of 36 spellers in the semifinal round, who took a computerized test to narrow the remaining spellers for the final round.
He correctly spelled "hermeneutics" (which is the study of the methodological principles of interpretation and explanation) in the semifinals. But he did not score enough points to advance to the Championship Finals.
Twelve other spellers from around the country will compete in the Championship round, which starts at 6:00 Thursday night.
Yasir enjoys playing both the piano and saxophone. Math is his best subject in school, and he can recite pi up to 108 digits. One day, he hopes to use his skills to get into Harvard University to study medicine.
