Election day registration proposal approved by House committee
SPRINGFIELD - A bill that would allow election-day voter registration has been advanced by Democrats in the Illinois House. As the end of the spring session draws near, House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie's proposal was approved 7-4 in a committee Friday.
Currie's proposal would allow voters to register on election day, extend in-person voting hours, and would remove identification requirements for in-person early voting and also allow public universities to serve as locations of election day in-person absentee voting. The changes would be in effect for the November election.
According to Republicans, the move is an attempt to drive Democratic turnout in a very close, nationally watched race. However, advocates say it would help register thousands of voters who were turned away in past elections.
