Illinois woman faces theft charges for bogus cancer claims
BELLEVILLE - A Belleville woman is accused of theft after wrongly collecting donations from hundreds of people she tricked into believing she had cancer.
On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Alissa Jackson, 31, with two felony theft counts. Police say community members reported their suspicions about Jackson, and an investigation was started. They also say investigators found that Jackson wasn't dying of late-stage ovarian cancer as she was claiming.
Authorities did not disclose how much Jackson allegedly profited from her scheme. Jackson is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, and is currently in jail on $100,000 bond.
