AT&T Relocates Up to 200 Jobs out of Springfield

AT&T has decided to consolidate the jobs at it's call center in Springfield into other facilities around the state.  The main one being a call center in Rantoul. The company is offering Springfield employees the opportunity to pick up their same job at that center, along with a relocation allowance.  However, Rantoul is about 100 miles away from Springfield which ends up being an hour-and-a-half drive.  Those who decide not to pick up their work in Rantoul will receive priority consideration for other openings within AT&T.  Employees have until August 2nd to relocate to Rantoul or land that other job within the company.  Those who leave the company all together or can't land another job within, will receive a severance package.  As for numbers, less than 200 employees are affected by the decision and a spokesman from AT&T says the move is an effort to better serve customers and increase efficiency.  That spokesman also stressed that AT&T is committed to keeping jobs in Illinois.  In 2013 and through April of this year, the company hired 1,600 employees across the state.
