Live album from Chicago-based jazz trio wins award

SPRINGFIELD - An album recorded by a Chicago-based jazz trio during a live performance at a Springfield theater has earned an award.

David Cain, Paul Wertico, and Larry Gray recorded "Sound Portraits" at the Hoogland Center for the Arts last summer.  The album was one of thousands submitted for selection, and at the annual Independent Music Awards Tuesday it won top honors for a live performance.

Wertico teaches jazz studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago, and is a seven-time Grammy Award winner.  He says the performance came "spontaneously from the heart" and was 100 percent improvised.

The group is currently editing and mixing a performance from the Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, which Wertico says inspired the music.
