Lions Club offers free eye screenings for diabetic retinopathy
CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Lions Club and the Lions of Illinois Foundation will provide free diabetic retinopathy screenings on Friday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Promise Healthcare. The screenings can help detect early warning of diabetic retinopathy or possible macular degeneration of the eye.
Anyone of any age may be tested, but the screening is important for anyone 55 years of age or older. If undetected, diabetic retinopathy can have severe visual consequences, and could even result in blindness.
In screenings last year, between seven and ten percent of those screened received notice of a possible problem. If a problem is suspected, that participant is urged to see an eye doctor for further evaluation and possible treatment. The test can also be an early indicator of diabetes in some cases.
Those who wish to participate should register at Frances Nelson when they arrive for the test. The test takes about five minutes, and the results will be mailed to each individual.
