Man sentenced to 20 years in prison for stabbing

URBANA - A Fithian man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for slashing a University of Illinois professor's throat at a Champaign train station in 2011.

Joshua Scaggs, 26, was sentenced Monday.  Scaggs pleaded guilty last month to attempted first-degree murder.  According to prosecutors, Dhammika Dharmapala, 44, was stabbed in the neck by Scaggs in December 2011.

During the sentencing hearing, Scaggs apologized to Dharmapala, saying that he was sorry for the pain he had caused.

Dharmapala read a statement, describing the toll the attack has taken on him and his family.  Judge Harry Clem called the case "one of the most appalling crimes to ever come before this judge's bench.
