Soldier killed in friendly fire airstrike remembered by Illinois village
MOKENA - An Illinois soldier that died in Afghanistan last week is being honored by residents in a northern Illinois village.
Over 400 T-shirts have been sold to benefit 19-year-old Pvt. Aaron Toppen's family. The shirts are blue and have "In Loving Memory" written on the front, and "Freedom Isn't Free" written on the back. Residents are also tying yellow ribbons around trees.
Toppen was among the five soldiers killed June 9 in a friendly fire airstrike. Midway International Airport is planning an escort when Toppen's body is returned to Mokena. Funeral arrangements for Toppen are pending.
