DECATUR - A man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun several times inside his room at the Decatur Inn. Decatur police say Stephen Hathaway, 69, faces preliminary charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm.
Around 7:45 a.m., Decatur police say they received a call from a guest at the Decatur Inn that a man staying at the inn had a gun, and that she had already heard a gunshot. Decatur Police Officers immediately responded.
Upon arrival, police say they heard gun shots coming from a room, and immediately evacuated all guests of the Decatur Inn, as well as evacuating and closing nearby businesses and stopping northbound traffic at 3000 N. Water. This was done to ensure the public's safety from the suspect's gunfire.
Police say the suspect fired a Remington rifle ten times. At about 8:56 a.m., police say they started to negotiate with Hathaway, and the situation ended with Hathaway agreeing to surrender to police. Hathaway was taken into custody at 9:04 a.m.
Decatur police also say they found a high-powered scope rifle, a revolver, and a semi-automatic handgun in the room Hathaway had been staying in, along with several shell casings and bullet impacts in the corner of the room.
No one was injured in this incident. The Decatur Police Department is very appreciative of the surrounding businesses that evacuated closed during the incident. Their cooperation with police helped bring the matter to a safe ending.
