Conference scheduled for the appeal of a mine permit
HARRISBURG - Opponents of plans for a coal mine near Harrisburg soon could know whether their appeal of a permit for the project may go forward.
A pre-hearing conference for the appeal of Peabody Energy's plans has been scheduled for July 2 by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Both the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and IDNR granted permits earlier this year to allow the new Rocky Branch strip mine, with other permits pending. However, Cottage Township residents and township trustee Judy Kellen claim their homes, health and the environment would be damaged by the mine Peabody is proposing.
The mine was be an extension of an existing one, and would come within 300 feet of some homes just south of Illinois 13 near Harrisburg.
