PEKIN - Carbon monoxide poisoning has claimed the lives of two workers at an agricultural products plant in central Illinois.
Officials say gas in a rail tanker killed the workers shortly after noon Tuesday at Agridyne LLC in Pekin. The two workers were cleaning the car which contained a small amount of corn-based liquid when they were overcome by built-up carbon monoxide inside it.
One worker fell into the rail tanker car before his colleague attempted to rescue him. The rescuer died on the scene, and the second victim was taken to Pekin Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead. around 1:30 p.m.
Pekin police, fire officials, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration plan to investigate the accident.
