American Red Cross offering safety tips for Independence Day weekend
ILLINOIS - Many people will be traveling, enjoying fireworks, and firing up the backyard grill this Independence Day weekend, and the American Red Cross is offering a series of steps to safely enjoy the weekend.
Millions of people will be on the highways over the weekend, and as such, the Red Cross is reminding everyone to pay full attention to the road, don't use a cell phone while driving, to use caution in work zones, observe speed limits and use seat belts, and do not drink and drive.
It's also suggested to attend a public fireworks show presented by professionals, but should you set fireworks off at home, remember some of these safety tips. Light only one firework at a time, make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection, keep a supply of water close by as a precaution, and never throw or aim a firework toward people animals vehicles, structures, or flammable materials.
Finally, tips to ensure safe grilling this weekend include the use of long-handled tools made specifically for cooking on the grill to keep the chef safe, always supervise the grill when in use, never grill indoors, and keep the grill out in the open, away from anything that could catch fire.
